Placid Girl Brenna Ehrlich 9780692490815 Books Reviews
Right from the start, the staccato prose of Placid Girl is almost an assault on the senses. Part mystery, part social commentary the work combines two contemporary issues social media and hero worship.
Hallie, aka Placid Girl, is a drummer in a band. She’s timid, gripped by stage fright, and over shadowed by her more confident friend, Sarah. Obsessed with a mysterious musician, Haze, who is reclusive and been missing for years, Hallie’s chance meeting with a blogger sets in motion a chain of events.
Haze, is not the voice of a generation, but of misfits and outcasts, who have been force-fed a diet of sugary pop stars and auto tune. He wears a mask, is a philosopher-artist, and suddenly, he’s texting Hallie.
Setting out to meet Haze, Hallie and her friends embark on a road trip, but unravel more than one mystery. When reality meets obsession, masks drop, truths are held up to clarity, and priorities realigned.
This story is disaffected youth, on the verge of adulthood but not quite there yet. They’re looking for something authentic, something to believe in a world full of fakes and unsatisfactory home lives.
Placid Girl has some great lines in it and gives a wry nod to youthful narcissism. I’d recommend this book to anyone who is interested in realistic-YA and also, alternative music lovers.
I received a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads
Oh, where to start on this awesome rollercoaster ride of a read. Ok, so, it's not just a rock/punk/musician book, it's not just a YA romance, it's a suspenseful drama filled thrill ride. Hallie is a teenage girl and a drummer, a damn good one. But she's also a total fangirl about a particular local punk band, called Haze. They're from her hometown but only put out one record, her absolute favorite record, then fell off the face of the earth. After a strange post on a picture that she shared on her social media page from her recent gig by an anonymous man named only ZZZ, Hallie is thinking it could be the long lost singer of Haze reaching out to her! She embarks on a journey to a promised one time Haze reunion show in the big city. The trouble that ensues on her way is unbelievably action packed with heart thumping awesomeness! Traveling with her best friend and singer Sarah, Steve, the record store clerk and blog music reviewer, Hallie and pals have more than a few bumps in the road trying to find Haze and make it to the show. Perfect teenage drama mixed with real suspense and complete mystery that includes a masked man texter who leads a previously innocent Hallie along the path to ultimate trouble. Who is Haze? Is this for real? What has he done? WOW! This story kept me guessing till the very end and kept me reading like a mad woman to find out! While I found Ehrlich a bit overly descriptive and full of flowery prose I cant even give her issue with it since it was so well done. Hallie's character is almost the perfect coming of age teen girl with parent issues, bestie problems and who's never even been kissed before, going on the road trip of her life. Absolutely loved it!
"I live in a placid town by a placid little seaside, where everyone is born and bred to wear placid little faces. I live by a placid little bridge that goes up and down, separating one side of the placid little river from the other at placid little intervals. But I am a roiling-insides girl and I feel the tide coming in and I need to escape."
This book really surprised me! When I read the blurb, I was expecting a contemporary roadtrip-type YA, and while that's sorta what I got, I also got something entirely different.
I'll admit that it took me a while to warm up to Placid Girl. I had a hard time, initially, growing accustomed to Hallie's voice. Pieces of the prose definitely didn't work for me - I mentally stumbled a few times while reading because certain imagery just didn't work for me at all - but I pressed on, and I'm glad I did. This book was so much more than I first thought. The book is also a bit slow to start, but once things got rolling, I had a really hard time tearing myself away.
Music was a pretty huge part of my late high school & early college years, though not as much as it was for some of my friends... but the musical aspects of this story fit comfortably into that part of me. That was sooooo nice. I enjoyed the lyric snippets, especially. Some weren't to my taste, but I really liked others. There's also a really creepy undertone threaded throughout the book, which definitely kept me turning the pages, wondering what was going to come out of it.
Overall, Placid Girl is a slow build in the beginning, but it took me places I DEFINITELY didn't expect. I really enjoyed it.
I just want to start off by saying that this will probably be up there on my favorites list. This story, is... Wonderful, intense, and beautifully strange. Truthfully when seeing the cover I wasn't all that excited, but the synopsis left me feeling a bit curious so this wasn't a cover shop for me, which being honest over here I do quite a bit. The characters were relatable angsty teens, the setting was exciting and I was hooked lined and page turning from practically beginning to end. I couldn't put it down! I wasn't expecting a mystery, or this vibe of having cold chills through out the whole book. But I had this tingling in the back of my neck when things creep you out, my arm hair would raise randomly, like I stated before this is a seriously intense read. I can't write a proper review due to not wanting to give you any spoilers because it's just that good, loads more people need this book in their life.
Hands down a 10star read. Totally wish I had a paperback on my shelf so I could just randomly pull it out and reread scenes or the lyrics at the top on the chapters.
Dynamic writing and fabulous plot. She really gets it.
